Civil Structural Engineer (E.I.T Required, P.E preferred)

KGS Group International Inc. is seeking an Intermediate Civil Structural Engineer to join our growing North West Hydropower and Water Resources group. KGS Group is a multidisciplinary employee-owned consulting firm with offices in Winnipeg, Regina, Mississauga, Thunder Bay and Seattle.

In this position, you will undertake a leadership role within the department reporting directly to the Regional Director. You will participate in design, day-to-day project work, business development, mentoring and continued development of the team. You will be working in a friendly and collaborative environment with opportunity to interface directly with clients.


Responsible for design and analysis of steel and concrete structures as well as general civil engineering assignments. Responsible for both new and existing hydroelectric and water resource projects including heavy industrial facilities. Perform all engineering duties and activities required for the civil/structural design of projects and oversee/coordinate team projects with other engineering staff, clients, and contractors.

Daily duties include: utilize structural analysis and design skills for new components; develop structural details using Microstation, AutoCad, RISA, SAAP 2000, ANSYS or similar Finite Element Modeling Software; generate structural calculations, assist with geometric layout and quantity development, produce/review and/or check design calculations, cost estimates, feasibility studies, and specifications; analyze existing structures to verify their adequacy for change in type of use, including preparation of technical specifications of civil/structural items for projects; prepare construction documents, detail sketches, and review construction drawing packages for staff; and perform periodic field inspections.

Project assignments may include general civil engineering work on hydropower and ancillary facilities including but not limited to planning, hydraulic analysis, site design, grading, and drainage. Travel to job sites required.

Client interaction - must be able to effectively assume a lead role as project engineer at project meetings and communicate project and technical information. Support business development/marketing and proposal writing efforts.

Lead technical teams in the performance of civil/structural engineering for Hydropower and Water Resources services projects. Develop civil engineering design recommendations and provide technical reviews during the design and construction of these projects.

Project and technical task management including monitoring schedules scopes and budgets. The ability to direct the work of Assistant and Associate level engineers and CAD staff as well as mentor less experienced civil engineers. Also, possess knowledge and the ability to deal with interdisciplinary projects and support others doing the environmental/permitting aspects of civil projects.

Qualifications and Credentials:

  • Bachelor‘s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering;
  • Masters Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred;
  • E.I.T required;
  • P.E. to be attainable in 1+ year;
  • Minimum of 5+ years of civil-structural experience;
  • Experience in hydropower facilities or similar (water facilities heavy industrial etc.). Experience in hydropower facilities is a plus. Hydraulics experience is a plus;
  • Experience in modeling and analyzing (Static, Dynamic, Pushover, Time history, Linear and Non-linear) structures against dead, live, wind, seismic, blast, dynamic, operation, thermal, and fatigue loadings based on engineering standards and applicable codes;
  • Interest in performing all aspects of civil engineering including technical calculations, performing field inspections, technical writing, and project management is a plus;
  • Civil/structural analysis software or other as appropriate;
  • Having a drive, attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must;
  • Previous consulting experience is preferred;
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Candidates local to Seattle\Bellevue area strongly preferred.
