Senior Structural Engineer

Mississauga, Ontario

KGS Group is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with strong experience in managing large projects to join our Structural Department in Mississauga, ON. KGS Group is a multidisciplinary employee-owned consulting firm with offices in Winnipeg, Regina, Mississauga, Thunder Bay and Seattle.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 10 years' experience in the hydroelectric field, heavy civil projects, including water retaining structures and flood control structures, and will have knowledge of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines. The role will include the management of assigned projects and providing technical contribution to these projects as a senior engineer. The technical work includes working on feasibility studies, preliminary and final engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out structural inspections primarily for rehabilitation and upgrades to water retaining structures, hydroelectric facilities and new hydroelectric developments in Canada.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and delivery of professional presentations;
  • Assume Project Management responsibilities (customer satisfaction, deliverables, quality, schedule and budget) for assigned projects;
  • Plan, execute and control assigned projects, interface with clients and complete the required reporting and project controls;
  • Oversee the work of junior engineers;
  • Prepare bid / proposal packages;
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams;
  • Provide site supervision and technical support for construction projects on an as required basis;
  • Perform site inspection and condition assessment of existing concrete, steel or timber structures;
  • Assess structures in accordance with dam safety guidelines and environmental assessments and investigate alternative methods for carrying out remedial projects for hydroelectric facilities and water retaining structures (i.e., intake structures, retaining walls, penstocks, spillways, etc);
  • Preparation of rehabilitation or remediation options including costs and recommendations;
  • Planning and design of new hydroelectric projects and associated structures for the appropriate loads and service and environmental conditions;
  • Quantity and cost estimating for proposed construction projects;
  • Demonstrated experience with the preparation of clear, brief and competent technical reports and specifications;
  • Preparation of drawings with support from drafting resources.

Qualifications and Credentials:

  • As a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in civil engineering with a specialization in structural engineering;
  • Strong working knowledge of, and experience in civil engineering and structural principles and methodologies. Strong structural design and analysis background for hydroelectric structures. Must be able to work within multidisciplinary teams;
  • Must be fluent in English and be able to read, analyze and interpret engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Must also be able to write or proof read reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, colleagues and the general public. Competency in a second language, both spoken and written would be considered as an advantage;
  • Must have demonstrated experience and background in the successful delivery of consulting services and the execution of engineering projects;
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Mathcad. Proficiency in structural software such as “STAAD.Pro”. Working knowledge of AutoCAD would be an asset;
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario;
  • Work will mainly be carried out of our Mississauga office. Travel to various outdoor sites and durations at the sites will be determined by project needs.
