Civil Geotechnical Department Head

The Role

The Geotechnical Department Head will have the ability and experience to motivate and drive employees in our Civil Geotechnical Department to achieve KGS Group’s business goals and objectives. Strong people management skills are essential to encourage employee development and to ensure employees are engaged and efficient. The Department Head will drive business development, lead with integrity; demonstrate effective and efficient organizational skills. They will serve as a liaison between their department, Senior Management, and the rest of the organization. To fulfil these responsibilities, a reasonable amount of administrative time is anticipated in proportion to the size of their department. However, Department Heads are still expected to spend the most of their time actively managing projects and supporting Project Managers within their department, which is chargeable to those projects. Department Heads will assign tasks and share duties with their Assistant Department Heads as applicable. Other specific roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing approvals, technical oversight and mentoring on proposals and engineering deliverables.
  • Managing project delivery, client satisfaction and client retention.
  • Actively engage in business development by identifying opportunities and securing new clients and projects for the department.
  • Facilitating coordination of multi-disciplinary work and inter-departmental activities.
  • Tracking department key performance metrics and managing staff efficiency including workload distribution and chargeability.
  • Monthly forecasting of work and tracking of project status within the department including budgets, schedules, invoicing, closeout, and account receivables, followed by quarterly reporting to Senior Management
  • Working with Senior Management on adjustment of staffing levels according to business needs
  • Working with HR and Senior Management in employee recruitment, promotion, retention, succession planning, corporate culture, staff career streaming, and conflict resolution.
  • Building a positive working environment and proactively addressing concerns raised by employees.
  • Ensuring employees have access to tools, training and support that helps them develop and achieve success in their positions.
  • Working with the Quality Management team to uphold quality standards and procedures
  • Working with the Health and Safety Management team to reinforce safety as a top priority, compliance with local legislated and best practice safety needs and ensure required safety training and equipment is available to all staff.
  • Conducting annual employee reviews and recommendations on compensation.
  • Facilitating team-building activities and professional development of staff.

 About You

  • Typically, 15 years of experience, which will be a combination of technical, supervisory and business management experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering; an emphasis in geotechnical engineering is required. Post-graduate degree M.Eng., M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. in Civil/Geotechnical engineering is highly desirable.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to establish and foster an excellent business relationship with clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively lead and motivate employees and manage the department.
  • Proven planning, organization, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision making and negotiating skills; supplemented with the ability to influence and drive consensus and decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and multi-disciplinary project teams successfully in engineering consulting. 
  • Strong technical design and analytical skills. Experience with heavy foundation design for industrial and civil infrastructure, braced excavation, slope stability and soil-structure-water interaction, knowledgeable on site investigation techniques and instrumentation applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to sites as needed.
