Environmental Assistant Department Head

The Role

The Environmental Assistant Department Head will have the ability and experience to work within our department management structure, to motivate and drive employees to achieve KGS Group’s business goals and objectives. Strong people management skills are essential to encourage employee development and to ensure employees are engaged and efficient. Working directly with the Department Head, the Assistant Department Head will help drive business development, lead with integrity; demonstrate effective and efficient organizational skills. They will serve as a liaison between their department team, the Department Head, and the Senior Management group who oversee the environmental services division. To fulfil these responsibilities, a reasonable amount of administrative time is anticipated in proportion to the size of the department. However, Assistant Department Heads are expected to spend most of their time actively managing projects and supporting Project Managers, and project teams within their department, which is chargeable to those projects. Other specific roles and responsibilities may include the following, where the Department Head will assign tasks and share duties with the Assistant Department Head as applicable:

  • Providing approvals, technical oversight and mentoring on proposals and engineering deliverables.
  • Managing project delivery, client satisfaction and client retention.
  • Actively engaging in business development by identifying opportunities and securing new clients and projects for the department.
  • Facilitating coordination of multi-disciplinary work and inter-departmental activities.
  • Tracking department key performance metrics and managing staff efficiency including workload distribution and chargeability.
  • Monthly forecasting of work and tracking of project status within the department including budgets, schedules, invoicing, closeout, and account receivables, followed by quarterly reporting to Senior Management.
  • Working with the Department Head and Senior Management on adjustment of staffing levels according to business needs.
  • Working with HR, the Department Head and Senior Management in employee recruitment, promotion, retention, succession planning, corporate culture, staff career streaming, and conflict resolution.
  • Building a positive working environment and proactively addressing concerns raised by employees.
  • Ensuring employees have access to tools, training and support that helps them develop and achieve success in their positions.
  • Working with the Quality Management team to uphold quality standards and procedures
  • Working with the Health and Safety Management team to reinforce safety as a top priority, compliance with local legislated and best practice safety needs and ensure required safety training and equipment is available to all staff.
  • Conducting annual employee reviews.
  • Facilitating team-building activities and professional development of staff.


About You

  • 10 years of experience, which will be a combination of technical, supervisory, and business management experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Environmental Science, or Geoscience. Post-graduate degree (M.Eng., M.Sc. and/or Ph.D.) is desirable.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to establish and foster an excellent business relationship with clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively lead and motivate employees and help manage the department.
  • Proven planning, organization, problem-solving, conflict resolution, decision making and negotiating skills; supplemented with the ability to influence and drive consensus and decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects and multi-disciplinary project teams successfully in consulting engineering.
  • Strong technical design and analytical skills as related to environmental projects, which may include, but not be limited to, some or all of the following: contaminated site assessment and remediation; risk assessment and management; environmental impact assessment, licensing and monitoring; hydrogeology and hydrogeological engineering; emergency spill response; demolition and hazardous building materials assessment; solid waste design and management; and/or mine reclamation and tailings management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to sites as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.
