Mechanical Engineer-in-Training (US)

The role

The Mechanical Engineer-in-Training prepare mechanical engineering designs and related documents. You will work on assigned projects under the guidance of intermediate to senior level engineers while collaborating with engineers and designers from other disciplines. Working in a team environment, you will ensure projects are completed within allotted schedules and budgets and are up to high-quality standards.

You will gain valuable experience with turbines, gates and their associated systems, as well as other balance of plant systems in hydro structures. The successful applicants will have degrees from accredited universities and be excellent team players.

This position provides an ideal opportunity for a recent graduate to work with a highly experienced multi-disciplinary group of engineers to gain experience while working towards obtaining their Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.

Key responsibilities

  • Design modifications to, or entirely new, mechanical systems related to dams, control structures, water retaining structures and hydroelectric generating stations under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers
  • Visit job sites to inspect for drawing compliance, data gathering and witness commissioning activities
  • Mechanical engineering involving cranes, hoists, hydroelectric turbines, generators, and balance of plant systems under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers
  • Mechanical engineering design of gates, valves, pumps and other hydro-mechanical machinery under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers
  • Mechanical system design including piping isometrics, pipe stress analysis, drawing preparation oversight, reliability analysis, fatigue analysis and thermal analysis under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers
  • Prepare and review reports
  • Perform routine calculations and design as directed
  • Assist with the preparation and review of proposals and reports.
  • Work collaboratively with other disciplines to execute project deliverables, as well as ensure that quality objectives, schedules and budgets are met
  • Perform other duties as assigned

About you

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in mechanical engineering from a recognized university; A post graduate degree is an asset
  • Registered (or eligible to become registered) with California as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
  • Previous experience with AutoCAD and Revit will be considered an asset
  • Travel to project sites is usually limited but will be required at times depending on project/client requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks
  • Have the drive, attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
