Solid Waste Engineer/Designer

KGS Group is looking for a Solid Waste Engineer / Designer to join our Environmental team in our Vancouver, BC office.

The Role

The Solid Waste Engineer / Designer will have a key role in developing and delivering solid waste projects from the proposal stage through design, construction and final delivery. You will work on planning and design projects that both build on your existing knowledge and expand your engineering experience through mentorship from our senior staff.  It is an asset to be registered with the relevant professional association, for design and report issuing. Working directly with all levels of environmental staff and technical staff from other disciplines, you will engage in design development or take on project management responsibilities and provide technical input and guidance on proposals, field investigation plans, system designs, tender document preparation, contract administration, and troubleshooting. You will serve as a technical resource to ensure quality planning, execution, and documentation for solid waste management work, sometimes collaborating with teams from multiple offices. Other specific roles and responsibilities may include the following, where the Department Head may assign tasks as follows:

  • Ability to deliver projects of significant complexity, and often with competing priorities.
  • Coordinating solid waste projects including solid waste planning, site assessments / inspections, waste audits, feasibility studies, modelling (e.g., landfill gas generation, economic, waste generation / disposal), environmental monitoring, facility / program design, capital, operating and master plans.
  • Interacting with clients and contractors on the phone and / or in person.
  • Facilitating coordination of multi-disciplinary work and inter-departmental activities.
  • Working with the Quality Management team to uphold quality standards and procedures.
  • Working with the Health and Safety Management team to reinforce safety as a top priority, compliance with local legislated and best practice safety needs and ensure required safety training and equipment is available to all staff.

   About You

  • A passion for making a difference and improving the environment.
  • At least 5 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Experience with various types of waste management facilities, including landfills, transfer stations, composting facilities and material and/or energy recovery facilities is considered an asset.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering is preferred, however an Environmental Science, or Geoscience background with relevant experience will be considered.
  • Possesses or is eligible to obtain Professional Engineering or Geoscientist registration.
  • Strong technical knowledge and demonstrated experience in solid waste management.
  • Strong organization and planning skills; strong research and technical writing skills. Ability to present information concisely and clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively lead and motivate employees and help manage project teams.
  • Demonstrated abilities to present to groups / committees, work with stakeholder groups and / or undertake engagement work is an asset.
  • Strong report writing and data analysis skills and a strong focus on quality and technical excellence.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional career development.
  • Experience and knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, regulations, codes, standards and best practices.
  • Experience with proposal writing and preparation.
  • The ability to make sound, defensible decisions.
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to sites as needed.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $140,000 annually.
