Structural Engineer-in-Training (Winnipeg)

The Role

In this role, you’ll work in a multidisciplinary team environment to prepare and review civil/structural engineering designs and related documents. The technical work includes working on feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out structural inspections primarily for rehabilitation and upgrades to water retaining structures, hydroelectric facilities and new hydroelectric developments in Canada and the USA. You will work on assigned projects under the guidance of Intermediate to Senior Engineers while collaborating with other engineers and designers of various disciplines.  Working in a team environment, you will ensure projects are completed within allotted schedules and budgets, and up to high quality standards.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing site inspections and condition assessments of existing concrete, steel or timber water retaining and water conveyance structures. You will periodically be required to visit sites which may include locations throughout Canada and the United States.
  • Assessing structures and investigating alternative methods for carrying out remedial projects for hydroelectric facilities and water retaining and flow control structures (i.e., intake structures, retaining walls, penstocks, spillways, etc.)
  • Carrying out structural design and analysis for dams and hydroelectric facilities (concrete, steel, wood, post tensioning, including finite element analysis)
  • Carrying out concept and preliminary design of structures and associated civil infrastructure for proposed projects.
  • Assist ongoing construction projects with construction support and assist in preparing, reviewing and coordination submittals to meet project timelines
  • Preparation of deliverables for projects including reports, calculations, drawings and/or specifications.
  • Quantity and cost estimating for proposed construction projects.
  • Analyzing and interpreting engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, code/standards and governmental regulations. Must also be able to write or proof-read reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, colleagues and the general public.
  • Keeping the project team and department managers advised of work progress, challenges and issues.
  • Assist in the preparation, development, and write-up of proposals.
  • Providing construction site support, periodically or full time dependant on the project.
  • Participating in mentorship and professional development.
  • Coordinating with external consultants, vendors as required to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Helping to maintain strong relationships with clients.

About You

To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights could include:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering specializing in structural design from a recognized university. (Master’s degree or PHd is an asset but not required)
  • Coursework including post tensioning, dynamics and finite element analysis are considered an asset.
  • A strong working knowledge of water resource engineering, hydrology and hydraulic design are considered an asset.
  • Registered (or eligible to become registered) with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM).
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience required, preferably in an engineering consulting environment.
  • Existing construction experience including field inspection would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in the water resource and hydroelectric field with heavy civil projects, including water retaining structures and flood control structures, and knowledge of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines is an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Availability to periodically travel to project sites on an as required basis for site visits, typically for data collection, review of construction or attendance at coordination or design review meetings.
  • Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis software such as “STAAD.Pro”, SAP2000, Ansys, Sframe is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD , other drafting tools and Mathcad would be an asset.
  • Strong proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office (excel, word, powerpoint).
  • Highly proactive with exceptional problem solving/analytical skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability/willingness to undergo security clearance checks.
  • Attendance at a KGS Group office regularly is encouraged to strengthen the mentorship and development of staff. Flexible working hours and arrangements are dependant on the applicant.
  • Proficiency in both French and English is an asset.
