Transportation Engineer-in-Training

KGS Group is seeking a Transportation Engineer-in-Training to join our Saskatchewan team in our Regina or Saskatoon office.

The Opportunity

In this role, you will become part of the transportation project delivery team. Many of our project sites include working evenings and weekends, most commonly on a 10/4 (10 days on, 4 days off) schedule for 12 -14 hours a day. The ability to work and travel to project sites will be required throughout all seasons. Vehicles, per diems, and out of town accommodation will be provided. The successful candidate would be quickly integrated into the existing team of engineers, technicians, and senior transportation professionals. Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing contractor and construction supervision and contract interpretation.
  • Performing asphalt concrete testing on construction projects.
  • Performing RTK GPS surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking as required on projects.
  • Conducting field and lab material testing (aggregate, soils) with an emphasis on accuracy and timely submission of results.
  • Performing project management duties which includes communicating with client project managers and contractors’ staff regarding the contract requirements.
  • Drafting reports and providing interpretation of contract documents and test results.
  • Knowledge of Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways Construction practices is considered an asset.
  • Performing financial reporting as required by senior managers and clients.
  • Contributing to a positive safety culture.
  • Provide input and guidance to our design teams with preparation of alterations, revisions, and tender packages.
  • Other tasks as required.

About You

To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experience.  Some highlights could include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Eligible for registration with APEGS.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Ability to lead and manage small teams.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently, and within tight timelines.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift or move 50lbs, stand for extended periods, walk over rough terrain, and perform repetitive movements.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction industry or transportation engineering would be considered an asset (including summer season work) but is not required. We hope to train and mentor the right individual to continue growing our expanding team.
