Vegetation Ecologist

KGS Group is currently looking to fill permanent and seasonal positions for Vegetation Ecologists of all levels in our growing Ecology and Environmental Impact Assessment Department. KGS Group has offices in Mississauga, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, and Vancouver. Candidates will be considered for any of these locations depending on experience and qualifications.

The Role

KGS Group is looking for a Vegetation Ecologists with a minimum of 3 years of consulting experience. The positions will be based out of any of our current office locations and be dependent upon project needs and your experience and qualifications. These positions are a mix of office and fieldwork. The positions are not currently hybrid positions; however, accommodations may be made for the successful candidates. Successful applicants will be responsible for leading or supporting general vegetation surveys, rare plant surveys (terrestrial and aquatic), weed inventories, wetland delineation, classification, and functional assessments, environmental monitoring, and regional planning and permitting. You will also be responsible for leading or supporting subsequent technical writing, reporting and regulatory submissions. Prior consulting experience would be considered a defining advantage for candidates. The successful applicant will be an up-and-coming technical leader, or current leader in your field with the drive to participate in a growing dynamic environmental planning and permitting team!

Your Key Responsibilities:

• Conducting vegetation inventories, listed plant surveys, and weed surveys in your region.
• Conducting wetland delineation, classification, and functional assessments. Preference will be given to candidates previously approved by a regulatory body to complete wetland work in your region.
• Design and implement vegetation and wetland related surveys for your region.
• Conduct environmental monitoring for a wide variety of construction projects.
• Lead and/or contribute to vegetation and wetland technical documentation, writing impact assessment statements, and regulatory submissions in your region.
• Develop and contribute to mitigation measures, monitoring, and mitigation planning.
• Complete technical review of deliverables completed by more junior personnel to support KGS Group IMS standards.
• Mentor more junior personnel in field techniques and technical writing.
• Collaborate with other Departments and KGS Group team members as required and contribute and support non-wildlife related projects.

About You

To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences.

Qualifications:

• Graduate of post-secondary education related to vegetation, wetlands, ecology, environmental sciences, or biological science. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
• Minimum 3 years of work experience conducting rare plant surveys and wetland surveys, preferably in a consulting capacity.
• Experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing field programs.
• Experience in data entry, quality assurance, and quality control for data sets, including the use of electronic field to office programs such as Survey 123, or equivalent software programs.
• Experience working independently and in a team. You must be a team player, know what you don’t know, and are willing to give 100% every day.
• Demonstrated strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to work for extended periods up to 14 days in the field across Canada.
• Demonstrated experience working outdoors in a wide variety of conditions.
• Ability to conduct physically demanding work in highly variable weather conditions.
• Valid class 5 driver’s license.
• Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position, including the ability to lift and maneuver over 30 kg.

Experience with the following will be considered assets:

• Experience with conducting and writing discipline relevant sections of Environmental Impact Assessments, provincial and federal.
• Demonstrated experience with environmental permit submissions in your region of employment.
• Experience with ATV, UTV, and Argo operations.
• Demonstrated experience working with contractors in the capacity of environmental monitor or inspector.
• Experience working in isolated and remote areas.
• Preference will be given to candidates already licensed or approved by a regulatory body to complete rare plant survey and wetland work in your region.
