Water Resources GIS Technologist
KGS Group is seeking a Water Resources GIS Technologist to join our well-established, Winnipeg Water Resources Engineering Department.

The Role
This position will focus on the development of specialized GIS deliverables for water resources projects including:
- Flood hazard mapping and floodplain delineation
- Dam breach inundation mapping
- Hydraulic model result visualization (1D and 2D outputs)
- Emergency planning and dam safety mapping
- Technical figures and mapping to support engineering reports and regulatory submissions
This role may be filled at the entry or intermediate level depending on experience.
You will work closely with water resources engineers and hydraulic modellers to transform technical model results into clear, defensible, and high-quality spatial products that support engineering decision-making and regulatory approval processes.
Your Key Responsibilities
Entry-Level (0–4 Years Experience)

- Prepare floodplain and inundation maps using ArcGIS Pro based on model outputs (e.g., HEC-RAS).
- Develop clear, professional figures for technical reports and presentations.
- Compile, clean, and manage spatial datasets (LiDAR, DEMs, orthophotos, shapefiles, survey data).
- Assist with geodatabase creation and maintenance.
- Support basic spatial analysis and data processing.
Intermediate-Level (4+ Years Experience)
In addition to the above:

- Independently develop flood hazard mapping and dam breach inundation mapping products.
- Process and visualize 2D hydraulic model outputs.
- Develop and manage project geodatabases.
- Perform spatial analysis to support hydraulic modelling and design.
- Automate GIS workflows using Python
- Contribute to development of internal GIS standards and templates.
- Coordinate directly with engineers and occasionally clients regarding mapping scope and deliverables.
- Review and QA/QC GIS products prepared by others.
About You
To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Required qualifications include:
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Design & Drafting Technology, Geography, or GIS Technology.
- Strong organizational skills, technical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Additional Skills Considered an Asset
- Experience in floodplain mapping or water resources projects
- Familiarity with hydraulic modelling software outputs (e.g., HEC-RAS).
- Experience working with LiDAR data and digital elevation models.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or MicroStation.
- Programming experience (Python, ArcPy, SQL).
- Experience preparing figures for regulatory submissions.
