Charette Road Asphalt Reconstruction
KGS Group was retained by the City of Winnipeg for preliminary design, detailed design, contract administration (with full-time resident inspection) and overall project management for the asphalt reconstruction of Charette Road. This project included 1,680 metres of 2-lane asphalt roadway with improved ditch drainage and culvert installations within the Brady Road Resource Management Facility on the outskirts of Winnipeg. The primary goal was to provide a permanent, heavy duty and safe driving surface for residential, commercial and operational users. The assignment also incorporated a stand-alone assessment and design for 200 metres of landfill cell access road that had previously failed from geotechnical instabilities.
A site topographic survey and geotechnical investigation were conducted to collect key design information for both roadways, and to investigate the cause of the failure of the access road. Based on these investigations, KGS Group developed preliminary concept layouts for the roadways, and completed a geotechnical analysis of the landfill access road. During the detailed design phase, KGS Group determined the reconstruction required an improved pavement structure and surfacing, along with improvements to shoulders, geometry, drainage and traffic management. The project also required extensive coordination with agencies, utilities and Manitoba Hydro.
KGS Group provided a contract administrator and full-time resident inspector to manage the construction activities from spring through summer 2018. Technical support was comprehensive. Following the construction phase, KGS Group submitted completion certificates, administered warranty items, completed as-built drawings and finalized a construction report.
