Royal Canadian Mint Geothermal Process Cooling System

KGS Group partnered with the Royal Canadian Mint to design and oversee construction of a cutting-edge, open-loop geothermal cooling system for their new coin-making process—a first for the Mint. This innovative system uses the earth's natural temperature to cool equipment, drastically reducing energy use and nearly eliminating greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional cooling.

Previously, the process equipment was cooled using energy-intensive chillers and cooling towers. Now, the geothermal system only requires a single pump for cooling. As the water cools the coin-making equipment, it increases in temperature. Heat pumps use the free heat to warm the Mint building using space heaters and ventilation equipment.  The well water is then returned to the underground source.

The system also provides thermal balancing of the ground loop for system longevity, significantly reducing energy use and environmental impact.
